My son Quinn and I started climbing the New Hampshire 48 4000 footers in August of 2014 and completed our adventure in September of 2015. This blog provides details from each of our hikes. Check out our Trailwrights 72 blog to see what we're currently up to!

Cannon

Total trip duration: 2:25:09
Distance: ~4.2 miles
Hikers: Vance and Quinn
4000 footer completion count: Cannon #27 (4,100 feet)

Quinn's lacrosse game was cancelled today so we decided to hike to the top of Cannon mountain and make the most of the beautiful weather!  The Kinsman Ridge trail is only about 2.1 miles long but it's fairly steep for the majority of the hike.

He's got his skis on his pack and he's psyched to be hiking after a being away from the mountains for too long!

Still smiling after some pretty rigorous hiking.

The summit is within reach!

We only ran into a couple of hikers on the way up but there were a ton of people at the top of the ski area enjoying some spring skiing.  We got our picture taken with Lincoln and Lafayette (completed 2014-12-29) in the background.  The weather was just outstanding and the views were amazing!

We had some lunch in the sun at the summit tower.  It's always been windy on my prior visits to Cannon but we were fortunate to have very low wind speeds for our trip today.

The 360 degree views were excellent from the top but Quinn was eager to get his skis on!

He's ready to hit the slopes below!

The skiing was typical spring mashed potatoes.

We had to stop regularly to take in all the views!

Great view of the still frozen Echo lake.

Paulie's was calling and we had to answer!

Hanging out by the Ski Museum at the end of our run.

What a terrific day.  Some of the best days seem to come when you least expect it.  We found it hard to pull ourselves away from the sun drenched mountain and onto I93.  It was a great quick day trip and we're hoping to get in some more spring hiking as time permits.

Quinn's Take

On Sunday, I hiked Cannon Mountain with my dad.  We decided to ski down.  We packed our skis, boots, helmets and poles.  At first the weight of my back pack was hurting my back so my Dad carried my boots for me.  That made it much easier to hike!

The trail was on the back side of the mountain.  It was very steep, but short- about 2 miles long.  There was a lot snow and ice.  Even with our spikes on it was pretty tricky.  As we followed the trail, we crossed the glades and heard skiers coming down.

Once we saw the tram hut we knew we were getting closer to the top.  We ate lunch at the top and enjoyed the beautiful view!  We talked to some skiers who congratulated us for making it up.

We skied down a black diamond trail to the bottom.

It was a warm and sunny day- perfect for spring skiing! I had the best time ever!
